Frequently Asked Questions
What is Cervisafe?
Cervisafe is a simple device that allows you to collect your own cervical materials at home, followed by a combination test of DNA analysis to detect HPV strains and microscopic examination for cell changes in your cervix.
What is in the Self Sampling Cervisafe kit?
The kit includes one Cervisafe device, one vial containing preservative liquid, a courier bag, and an instruction for use.
Who can use the Cervisafe device for screening?
All sexually active women who should go for Pap test can use the Cervisafe device. If you have had uterus removed (hysterectomy), screening is generally not recommended. Please consult with your doctor.
I am not sexually active, should I use the Cervisafe device?
If you never had sexual intercourse before, using the Cervisafe device is not recommended.
Can I use the Cervisafe device during my menstrual period?
No. Please wait until your period is clear to conduct the self-sampling. The test result may possibly be affected if sample is collected during your menstrual period.
I am pregnant. Can I use the Cervisafe device?
We do not have user experience with pregnant women using the Cervisafe device. However, if you find out that you are pregnant after having used the Cervisafe device, there is no reason to be concerned.
Can the Cervisafe device fit into my vagina?
The Cervisafe device is ergonomically designed to fit for the female vagina.
Is the Cervisafe device clean?
Yes. The device is sterile and for single use only.
Is using the Cervisafe device painful?
It should not be painful. A survey found that almost all users rated their experience as good or excellent. Most women (93.2%) preferred self-sampling with Cervisafe compared to sample collection conducted by physician during our survey study.
If I purchase the Cervisafe device, how soon do I have to conduct the self-sampling?
You must use the device before the expiration date which is printed on the pouch.
How do I know if I used it correctly?
If you have followed the instructions given to do the self-sampling, then you should be doing fine. At rare times when there is insufficient sample, the laboratory will contact you.
I see blood in the vial after doing the self-sampling. Is this normal?
Some blood present will not have an effect on the test performance. Therefore, there is no reason to be concerned.
I have some vaginal bleeding after doing the self-sampling. Is this normal?
There is a risk of slight vaginal bleeding during the sampling which may be due to contact with cervical or vaginal polyps on the surface of cervix or vaginal canal. Cervical polyps are growths usually benign, which are relatively common, especially in women above 20s who have had at least one child. Therefore if you encounter some vaginal bleeding, there shouldn't be any concern to worry about. However, if you experience continue bleeding (not during menstrual cycle) after using the Cervisafe device, you should consult with your Gynaecologist.
If I have received the HPV vaccine, do I still need to go for regular Pap and HPV screening?
YES. It is known that approximately 70% of the reported cervical cancer cases are caused by HPV 16 and 18. However, the present vaccination services that are currently available do not provide protection against all other HPV types.
